CHAPTER THIRTY

THE MOMENT TANNER stood to leave, his thoughts turned to Jenny, and how bad the fallout was going to be that she’d found out he’d met his ex-wife for lunch in London without telling her.

Approaching their desks, he knew from the way she was glaring at her monitor whilst occasionally stabbing an accusatory finger at the keyboard that she was fuming.

‘You OK?’ he asked, attempting to catch her eye as he pulled his chair out.

‘Fine!’ she replied. ‘You?’

‘Good, yes,’ he responded.

A frosty silence followed, with Tanner left wondering what to say next, and Jenny continuing to try and murder her computer using nothing more than her bare fingers.

The most obvious thing for him to do was to simply apologise for not telling her. However, doing so would almost make it seem as if there was something going on that he had to apologise for, when there most definitely wasn’t. There was also the chance that she’d not overheard him, but was upset about something completely different, and telling her would only exacerbate her current forbidding mood.

Eventually Tanner decided that it was probably best to just leave it. It wasn’t as if Jenny didn’t know that he’d been married before, and that he would therefore have to occasionally communicate with his ex-wife. In fact, thinking about it, he wasn’t even sure why he had to tell her whenever he did.

He glanced over at her face. Her narrowed eyes, pouting lips and flushed cheeks made him think that even if he should bring up the subject and apologise, it may be more sensible to wait until she’d calmed down a little, or at least until they were away from the office, just in case it escalated into a full blown argument.

Having made up his mind, he said, ‘Forrester thinks we should be focussing our attention on James Falcon and Jim Jackson.’

‘At what point were you going to tell me that you’d met your wife for lunch when you went down to London?’ demanded Jenny, glaring at him.

OK, time to apologise, he thought.

‘Sorry, yes. I should have told you about that, but it wasn’t planned. It was when I was on my way back. Liverpool Street Station isn’t far from where she works, so I thought I’d give her a call, to touch base. It’s not often that we talk, and it just seemed to make sense to use the time whilst I was down there to catch up.’

‘Over lunch?’

‘Over lunch, yes.’

‘And then for you to not tell me about it.’

‘It wasn’t that I made a conscious decision not to,’ he lied. ‘It was more that by the time I got back, I had more important things on my mind.’

‘I see. And did you do anything else when you were down there that you thought best not to mention?’

‘Nothing, no.’

‘Apart from phoning up your old boss, of course.’

Wondering just how much of the conversation she’d overheard, Tanner replied, ‘That was to do with what I’d been discussing with my wife.’

‘I sincerely hope you mean your ex-wife?’ sneered Jenny.
